Fire Safety for Camping

Camping presents several unique fire hazards The Shelton Fire Prevention Bureau suggests that you consider these tips to help keep you family safe when away from home. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends the following:

Always use a flame-retardant tent and set up camp far away from the campfire. Read the labels before purchasing.

Pitch a tent at least 15 ft. upwind of grills and fireplaces. Also try to keep you tent away (at least 5 ft.) from vegetation

Only use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns inside the tent, camper or any other closed space. Never, ever use liquid-filled heaters or lanterns.

Keep a fire extinguisher and/or large container of water available at all times at your campsite.

Always build your campfire down wind away from your tent. Clear all vegetation and dig a pit surrounded by rocks before building your campfire.

Always supervise children at all times when a fire is burning or a grill/stove is in use.

When cooking at a grill, camp stove or near a fire, always wear snug-fitting, tightly woven, preferably short sleeved clothing.

Try to avoid all flammable liquids and use of propane gas if possible. Only transport and store a minimal amount as needed. Handle compressed flammable gas with caution, following precautions indicated on the container. In any case, purchase liquids and gas as close as possible to your destination.

If you do use a liquid fire starter (not gasoline) store it away from your tent and campfire and only use dry kindling wood to a campfire. Never use flammable liquids other than lighter fluid that is intended to start Churchill. Follow manufacturer instructions and precautions.

Flammable liquids should be maintained in approved/listed proper containers. Metal safety cans are preferred. Such liquid should be stored away from the reach of children and a safe distance from sources of ignition, tents, campers, etc.

When filling lanterns and stoves, consider the above precautions. In addition, use a proper funnel and/or follow manufacturer instructions. Always use the proper fuel. Never substitute with a liquid having a different intent.

Be familiar with how to use a fire extinguisher, how to "Stop Drop and Roll" if clothing catches fire and how to treat burns.

Always put out a campfire or shut off a grill before leaving your campsite or before going to sleep.
