According to recent statistics of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were 6,100 reported home fires involving gas or charcoal grills in the U.S., leading to $29.1 million in direct property damage last year. The City of Shelton Fire Prevention Bureau encourages everyone to consider the following fire safety tips when cooking outdoors this summer season:

Locate grills and any propane tanks a safe distance from buildings, wooden decks and other combustibles.

When using barbecue grills on decks or patios, be sure to leave sufficient space from siding and eaves. Grills should NOT be utilized on wooden decks or balconies.

Use outdoor grills outdoors only. NEVER cook inside or in a garage nor store a propane tank indoors or within a garage.

Always watch a barbecue grill when in use.

Keep children and pets far away from grills.

Keep all matches and lighters up high and out of the sight and reach of children.

Have a fire extinguisher nearby and accessible. Periodically review operating instructions for safe use.

Charcoal grills: Only use charcoal starter fluids designed for barbecue grills and do not add fluid after coals have been lit.

Gas grills: Be sure that the hose connection is tight and check hoses carefully for leaks. Applying soapy water to the hoses will easily and safely reveal any leaks.

For gas grills, refer to the owner’s manual for information related to inspecting and cleaning of venturi tubes and burner where spiders and small insects may make nests or spider webs. This could lead to a fire. Frequent inspection and cleaning is typically necessary before use.

Periodically inspect gas hose and regulator for signs of damage, which may be cause by animals or age.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for operation, maintenance and cleaning. Have the grill repaired by a professional, if necessary.

Always have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, test them monthly and keep them clean and equipped with fresh batteries at all times. Know when and how to call for help. And remember to practice your home escape plan.
