Mayor Mark Lauretti presented a cash award of $75 to Dayna Nelson of Mr.
John D’Auria’s 6th Grade Class at Elizabeth Shelton School, winner of this
years' Sixth Grade Essay/Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest. In
addition, a $100 cash award for her classroom and the Essay Contest Plaque,
which is traditionally passed on from year to year to the winning classroom,
was presented to Dyna and her teacher.
Judging of this
contest was held December 4, 2000 in conjunction with the
Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest for 4th and 5th grade students. Guest
judges from the Connecticut Post and New Haven Register Newspapers spent much
time reviewing the numerous entries in the contest until making a final choice.
They reported that it was a very difficult decision, as all entries were
considered excellent.
Since the contest
began in 1996, its purpose has been to promote fire safety by having students’
research the topic while writing their PSA. The fire department/fire prevention
bureau would like to use the essay to help remind adults and children how
important fire prevention is to Everyone/Everyday.
