Year 2001 Sixth Grade Essay/Public Service
Announcement (PSA) Contest Winner
Essay to be available to view in late January 2004!
On January 23, 2002 Mayor Mark Lauretti is to
present a cash award to Gabriella Novak of Sister Margaret's 6th Grade Class
at Saint Lawrence School, winner of this years' Sixth Grade Essay/Public
Service Announcement (PSA) Contest. In addition, a $100 cash award for her
classroom and the Essay Contest Plaque, which is traditionally passed on from
year to year to the winning classroom, will be presented to Gabriella and
Sister Margaret.
Judging of this contest was held December 6, 2001
in conjunction with the Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest for 4th and 5th
grade students. Guest judges from the Connecticut Post, Huntington Herald and
New Haven Register Newspapers spent much time reviewing the numerous entries in
the contest until making a final choice. They reported that it was a very
difficult decision, as all entries were considered excellent.
Since the contest began in 1996, its purpose has
been to promote fire safety by having students’ research the topic while
writing their PSA. The fire department/fire prevention bureau would like to use
the essay to help remind adults and children how important fire prevention is
to Everyone/Everyday.

Gabriella is presented the classroom award plaque
in her classroom with her mother, Principal and teacher, Sister Margaret,
present.
