Annual Essay/Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest ![]()
Since the Shelton Essay/PSA Contest began in 1996,
its purpose has been to promote fire safety by having students’ research the
topic while writing their PSA. The fire department/fire prevention bureau uses
the winning essay to help remind adults and children how important fire
prevention is to Everyone/Everyday. The
contest is open to all 6th Grade Classrooms of Shelton public and
parochial schools. The Fire Prevention Bureau is grateful for volunteer judges
who are local journalists from the Connecticut Post, Huntington Herald and New
Haven Register Newspapers.
Contest rules and judging criteria are as follows:
One PSA should be
submitted for each classroom. This may be a group effort, or may completed by
an individual and voted on by the class or chosen by the teacher to represent
the classroom.
The PSA should be
1-1/2 to 2 typed pages and double-spaced.
Spelling, grammar,
content and the ability to compel the reader will be the judging points.
The theme of the project is " FIRE SAFETY - EVERYONE
EVERY DAY." Therefore, the topic may include escape planning, preventing
fire, smoke detectors, good housekeeping etc. Fire safety information is
provided in a package given to each school as reference material for the
students. Any information used other than that provided in the package should
be photo copied and attached to the PSA.
The winning classroom is presented with the contest
plaque that is engraved with the name of the school and classroom teacher. Any
winning individual receives a prize as well. A presentation is made in the
classroom and on the night of the Annual Fire Prevention Poster & Essay
Awards Ceremony at Shelton City Hall.
