Shelton
Juvenile Fire Setting Intervention Coalition
The Shelton Fire Prevention Bureau and Youth Service
Bureau have formed a collaborative effort to help juveniles and
families.
In recent years, it has become apparent that juvenile
firesetting is a very serious problem.
Communities across the country report that 40 – 70 percent of all
documented, intentionally set fires are set by children under the age of
18. In addition, the fire department
receives calls from parents of children who are setting fires. Often by the time these parents call, their
children have set many small fires or have been involved in extensive fire
play.
While curiosity about fire is natural in children, it can
have serious consequences. Families
often do not understand the power of fire however; fire department personnel
are aware of how quickly fire can get out of control and want to ensure that
this does not happen. One of the main
functions of the Shelton Juvenile Firesetting Intervention Coalition is to
provide youth and their families with fire education to increase their
knowledge of home fire safety practices.
The program is voluntary and requests for services may come from
parents, fire personnel, schools, etc.
The basic elements of the program include screening of youth referred
for a fire-related incident, education, assessment, referral to supportive
community agencies and follow-up with the family.
The ultimate goal of the Shelton Juvenile Firesetting
Intervention Coalition is to ensure the safety of children and their families
through a comprehensive, community-wide fire-safety education program.
