A fire involving a wood, or in some cases plastic plank, deck can quickly spread to involve the associated dwelling. Even a small fire can quickly get out of hand and result in serious damage to your home. In the case of an apartment or condominium complex fire can quickly involve property of your neighbors as well. Potential damage may be catastrophic.

The City of Shelton Fire Prevention Bureau encourages everyone to consider the following fire safety tips involving outdoor decks this summer season:

Start with good housekeeping. Eliminate dry leaves, combustible storage or other debris from beneath decks. Avoid staging trash and other combustible materials on the deck.

If you plan to permit smoking on a deck, be sure to have suitable disposal containers and ashtrays available. Paper or plastic cups, napkins etc. are NOT suitable for this purpose. Be sure butts are extinguished and that all smoking materials are kept out of reach of children.

Avoid use of open flame or smoldering items such as candles, food warmers, insect repellents, etc. on decks.

Electrical devices, outlets, cords, lighting, etc. should be suitable and listed by an approved testing laboratory for outdoor use. Inspect wires/cords for signs of wear or damage from animals. Check for broken or cracked plus. Have a licensed electrician properly install equipment.

Cooking grills should NOT be utilized on wooden decks or balconies. Locate grills and any propane tanks a safe distance from buildings, wooden decks and other combustibles.

If for some reason a grill must be used on or near a deck, be sure to leave sufficient space from siding and eaves of the house. Be sure the grill is in good working order and stable. Always watch a barbecue grill when in use and be sure flames/coals are completely extinguished immediately after use.

Have a fire extinguisher nearby and accessible. Periodically review operating instructions for safe use.
